Legal work is built on continuity. What came before shapes what comes next.
Over the past year, we’ve heard a consistent request from innovation teams and lawyers across the industry: Don’t make us start from scratch every time.
In a profession built upon precedent, this is hardly surprising. Lawyers often tell us how valuable it is when juniors reach a point where they understand the context of a matter, apply prior work appropriately, and adapt to the team’s preferences, without having to be reoriented each time. Increasingly, that’s the same expectation legal teams have for AI.
That’s why we’re excited to share that we’re co-building Memory in Harvey with the industry. Over the coming months, we’ll host customer listening tours and working sessions with firm innovation and corporate legal teams to understand what should be remembered, where it should apply, and who should have access.
Memory will carry forward the context you choose — matter details, relevant precedent, working preferences, and approved best practices — so work feels more consistent, connected, and efficient.
Importantly, this is a feature where governance is a central premise, not just a footnote. Firm admins can always choose to turn on and off Memory for their users. As an example of how this could work, when memory is enabled, Harvey could use past threads within your firm retention window as reference to answer a new question – this could be scoped to threads for that user, a client, a firm-wide process, or even just a matter. We’ll work with innovation teams to expand these granular administrative controls, auditability, user visibility, and ethical walls as Memory evolves.
We envision a future where you return to a due diligence review after a week, or pick up a draft motion after passing it to a colleague, and Harvey continues with the same context and structure — without compromising governance or control.
