Today, Harvey released How Mobile and AI Transform Legal Work: 2026 Outlook. Based on an independent survey of 200 legal professionals across North America, EMEA, and APAC, the report reveals a profession that has rapidly embraced mobility and AI — but has not yet connected the two. Respondents included both in-house counsel and law firm lawyers — not necessarily Harvey users — providing an unbiased view of how legal work is evolving across devices and contexts.

The data shows that lawyers work across locations, time zones, and contexts, and mobility is now the driver of modern legal work. Key findings include:

  • 89% check work messages multiple times per day outside standard work hours
  • 86% rely on mobile devices (smartphone or tablet) as their primary away-from-desk tool
  • 86% use smartphone or tablet as the primary device away from a desk
  • 90% use a smartphone for work

At the same time, the research reveals that the mobile AI gap is one of the clearest opportunities ahead. Most surveyed lawyers work on mobile — but switch back to laptops or desktops for use of AI tools. Key findings include:

  • 75% access AI primarily on laptop/desktop
  • Only 20% use AI primarily on smartphones
  • Just 5% use AI primarily on tablets

The report reveals that the next phase of digital maturity in the legal profession will depend on how effectively technology can support continuous, cross-device workflows without compromising accuracy, governance, or professional standards. Three themes stand out clearly from the data:

  • Mobility is essential. Lawyers expect seamless, secure access to tools wherever work happens.
  • AI is mainstream. Weekly usage (80%) demonstrates that AI is embedded into lawyers’ lives.
  • The mobile AI gap is defining a new frontier. Lawyers are mobile by default — but their AI engagement largely remains tied to laptops or desktops.

The report was released in tandem with a media preview of Harvey’s mobile app, designed to help lawyers work securely on the go.
