In conversation with Amal Clooney: How responsible AI could bridge the justice gap

Less than 10% of people around the world can reach a lawyer when they need one, and a shortage of lawyers is a major reason why. In Malawi, for example, fewer than 800 lawyers serve 22 million people. Closer to home, a third of adults in England and Wales have an unmet legal need. In the US, 1.4 million civil legal problems (71% of all cases) brought to legal services organizations cannot be addressed due to a lack of resources.

By dramatically increasing the capacity and reach of the legal system, AI could narrow that gap. It could also widen it. But in this myriad of exciting tools, each needs to consider what it means to deploy their groundbreaking technology responsibly and to account for the particular needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

Amal Clooney, Co-founder of the Clooney Foundation for Justice and Professor of Practice in International Law at Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and Claire Donse, International Head of Pro Bono and Co-Director of New Perimeter at DLA Piper, join Christopher Hook, Global Head of Responsible Business at Harvey.

They’ll discuss where AI is already extending legal help, where it potentially puts vulnerable people at risk, and what lawyers, firms and technology providers need to do to get it right.

Learning objectives:

  • Where AI is already reaching people who cannot get legal support, from frontline legal information tools to drafting protection orders

  • What responsible design looks like in practice: verified legal sources, human review, and secure handling of client data

  • How law firms, NGOs and technology providers can work together to expand pro bono capacity

  • How to support and foster the next generation of talent using AI and how to ensure that AI transformation includes everyone
