About Carvana

Carvana is the pioneer of buying and selling vehicles entirely online. Guided by its mission to change the way people buy and sell cars, Carvana has reshaped an industry through technology, data, and a customer-first approach that makes every step faster and more transparent.

Supporting that innovation is a legal function built for speed. Led by Paul Breaux, Carvana’s General Counsel since 2015, the legal team sits at the intersection of technology, finance, and regulation, translating complex and evolving frameworks into practical guidance that fuels profitable, scalable growth.

Opportunity

As Carvana expanded its nationwide platform, its legal workload multiplied across contracts, financings, and product development. Manual document handling and fragmented knowledge slowed turnaround and risked inconsistency.

“We were running into persistent speed and consistency challenges driven by manual review, outside-counsel dependencies, and fragmented documents,” recalls Breaux.

The mandate was clear: build a legal operation that could scale as fast as the business.

Solution

Carvana’s implementation of Harvey was led by a cross-functional team within the Legal Department as part of the company’s broader AI-integration strategy.

What began as a pilot with 19 participants has since scaled to more than 70 professionals across Legal, Government Affairs, Real Estate, Financial Reporting, and Investor Relations.

The team’s goal was not automation, it was architecture. With Harvey at its core, Carvana engineered a legal engine that streamlines workflows and connects precedent, drafting, and review through seamless integrations with Microsoft and iManage.

Speed as a Competitive Advantage

Each workflow optimized through Harvey became a new gear in Carvana’s legal engine — faster, more precise, and more consistent.

These gains aren’t abstract; they translate into real capacity. With Harvey, Carvana estimates that each of its lawyers now reclaims 7–10 hours every week, time redirected toward advising, strategizing, and leading.

Consistent outputs, faster onboarding, institutionalized expertise.

Together, these improvements have turned legal work into a compounding system, one that scales quality, consistency, and judgment, not just output.

Harvey for Word: Quality at Scale

The transformation began with Harvey for Word’s Playbooks feature. Starting with a single contractual playbook, the team generated accurate first drafts in minutes, achieving an 80% reduction in drafting and review time.

From there, the model scaled. Each new playbook in Harvey for Word standardized decision logic and anchored drafting to vetted precedents, ensuring every document — from settlement agreements to term deals — reflected consistent legal reasoning.

With Harvey for Word, Carvana’s lawyers handle drafting, precision edits, comparisons, and redlines directly in Word, cutting turnaround time and reducing reliance on outside counsel.

Across the board, Harvey has become the connective tissue of Carvana’s legal function, where speed and quality reinforce each other.

Impact

With repetitive tasks absorbed by Harvey, Carvana’s lawyers reclaim time for what matters: strategic negotiations, transaction acceleration, and board-level readiness. This shift isn’t about doing more with less; it’s about scaling expertise across every part of the business.

Harvey now takes the first pass on drafting, redlining, comparisons, and research, allowing attorneys to focus on judgment calls, stakeholder management, and deal strategy. The result is a legal function that operates with the same rigor and velocity as Carvana’s business, precise, data-driven, and consistent.

“Generative AI is transforming legal work from manual, document-heavy tasks to dynamic, data-driven workflows that are faster, more consistent, and higher quality,” says Breaux. “We see Harvey as the secure orchestration layer that anchors research, drafting, and quality control, letting us scale without compromising judgment.”

Carvana’s legal team has built a system, where human expertise and Harvey’s AI precision reinforce one another. In a business defined by speed, consistency, and trust, that engine helps Carvana move — confidently — into the future of law.
