Preparing Law Students for AI-Powered Legal Practice

Introducing a free Harvey Academy course to help law students build practical AI fluency.

by Harvey TeamMay 14, 2026

Today’s law students are entering a profession that is already being reshaped by AI. Across the legal industry, organizations are increasingly looking for graduates who can use these tools in practice, from contract drafting and M&A due diligence to case research and deposition preparation.

That’s why we’re launching Harvey Law Schools: Preparing for Legal Work*, the first Harvey Academy course built specifically for students. Harvey Academy aims to make legal AI literacy accessible to everyone, helping legal professionals and students turn AI potential into practice.

Available for free to students in Harvey’s Law School Program, this course is designed to help them build practical experience using AI before they enter internships, clerkships, and first-year associate roles. It covers AI-powered use cases the world’s leading legal teams are already implementing today alongside a discussion of the judgment and responsible-use principles legal practice demands.

Here’s a quick overview of what students will learn in the course:

Students who complete the course will earn a shareable certificate of completion that signals to employers they’ve developed hands-on familiarity with the AI workflows commonly used across the legal industry. For those preparing for recruiting, summer internships, and clerkships, that practical fluency can become a meaningful differentiator.

Expanding AI Education Across Law Schools

The course builds on Harvey’s broader Law School Program, which has expanded to more than 40 partner schools worldwide since launching in August 2025. The program gives students, faculty, and administrators free access to the Harvey platform and supports collaboration on AI curriculum development throughout the academic year.

Built with direct input from Harvey student ambassadors across partner campuses, the curriculum reflects the challenges and practical realities students encounter most often during law school and early legal work.

The real promise [of legal AI] lies in combining innovation with judgment — using technology to enhance, not replace, the lawyer’s strategic insight. Tools like Harvey are leading the charge in this space, streamlining diligence and contract work so lawyers can focus on higher-level strategy and client outcomes. This balance between efficiency and responsibility is key to shaping the future of law.

Just as importantly, the course emphasizes responsible AI use: understanding the limitations of AI-generated output, applying professional judgment, and using these tools in ways that align with the ethical standards of legal practice.

Through practical workflows and real-world legal use cases, students will learn how AI can support legal work while strengthening the judgment and critical thinking the profession demands. Harvey Law Schools: Preparing for Legal Work aims to help students enter the profession prepared to use AI thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively from day one.
